New technology and motorcycle tackle legendary event
One of the oldest sporting events in America add the latest in technology with an Italian flair as Ducati creates its blog for fans to follow the team using Multistradas to tackle a legendary uphill race.
While this isn’t the first time Ducati North America has participated in the Pikes Peak international Hill Climb, it will be the debut of the company's Multstrada 1200 taking on the Race to the Clouds, set to take place June 27th in Colorado. The Italian motorcycle manufacturer will partner with Spider Grips of Southern California to run the team.
“Considering the success we had with the Livingstons in 2008, we’ve been plotting a return to the mountain in 2010 since the early days of developing the new Multistrada 1200.” Said Ducati North America’s Sales and Marketing Director, Jason Chinnock.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. First competed in 1916 and this year marks the 88th running of the "Race to the Clouds."
The race is run on a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain; Pikes Peak! As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps muscle strength. The thin air also robs engines of 30% of their power at the summit.
This year the race has 11 classes and features a variety of automotive, semi truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck and motorcycle classes with a field approaching 200 competitors.
Team Spider Grips Ducati will field a two bike team with riders Greg Tracy and Alexander Smith. Greg and Alexander are no strangers to riding Ducatis up the mountain, both having raced the Hypermotard in 2008. Alexander and Greg are enthusiastic to race the Multistrada, planning to put its traction control, ride by wire throttle and other electronic revelations to good use.
Now, Ducati North America has added a Pikes Peak Race Blog, an internet resource where fans can follow the Pikes Peak Ducati Team from the building of the bikes through the Race to the Clouds on June 27th.Following a successful mountain recently, the Falkner-Livingston Ducati race team has prepared a blog for all to follow, documenting their adventures building and racing the new Ducati Multistrada 1200 in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

“We are excited to partner with Ducati for this year’s Pike Peak International Hill Climb,” said Spider Grips Principal Paul Livingston. “The new Multistrada 1200 caught our eye when Ducati unveiled it in Milan last November, and we have been dying to race one since.”
