Motorcycle rallies offer beads or beaches

Two corners of the country, both known for their own style of partying are kicking off motorcycle events this week giving riders the choice of beads or beaches.

Bike Week New Orleans starts on Wednesday bringing motorcycles and the French Quarter together. Running through Sunday May 9th the event is billed as the Big Easy, biker style. Starting with a Cinco De Mayo celebration at the Kamp the event is spread over two Broken Spoke locations, a Riverwalk venue and the legendary House of Blues.

Poker runs and entertainment from Joe Santana and tribute bands covering the hits of Bon Jovi, Bob Seger, Led Zepplin, The Eagles and The Doobie Brothers are all featured over the five day event.

For bikers looking for some time at the beach, the past controversies of Myrtle Beach has settled down to become the Grand Strand Bike Rally or Cruisin’ the Coast  starting on May 6th or 7th.

Between the City of Myrtle Beach imposing year-round helmet law and noise ordinances as well as limiting the number of vendor licenses, rally organizers have looked to surrounding cities and towns to host the popular annual event.

With the event able to trace its roots to 1940 it saw as many as 300,000 attendees at the height of its popularity. Now the South Carolina motorcycle event is striving to continue the legacy with a few hints to interested rally-goers;

  • Bring, wear or buy a helmet since the city of Myrtle Beach may be requiring you to wear a helmet if you travel through it.
  • Keep noise levels to minimum around town
  • Two bikes per parking space maximum
  • Obey all posted signs

The event’s website warns bikers not to call the City of Myrtle Beach for information as they only officially acknowledge that the city no longer hosts or sponsors the event.
