Suzuki backfires on motorcycle marketing for V-Strom

Suzukis V-Strom 2012It was a slow tease by Suzuki that may have brought more questions or disappointment than motorcycle salivation.

Following the well ridden road of ‘spy photos’ being leaked, the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer have released close-ups and action shots of the latest model to carry the V-Strom name.

Along with the photographs came the confirmation that it will be powered by a 645cc engine, which remains the same (for those keeping count). The model will be taller and longer, with a seat height of 835mm up by 15mm on the current model and a 5mm longer wheelbase. Reportedly the tank size will be slightly smaller.

It has been well discussed among the motorcycle press that the redesign of the V-Strom is aimed at the latest dual purpose rides from both BMW and Triumph, and it’s been hard for two-wheeled experts to avoid drawing direct comparisons.

It would appear the tag of ‘Middle-Class’ given in the earlier and more mysterious promotions relates to where the motorcycle will fall among the power range.

Ironically, the marketing may have backfired with some calling the latest V-Strom a ‘poor man’s adventure bike’.

As a proud owner of a 2009 V-Strom DL650 SEA (ABS), I was expecting not only an updated styling, reduced weight, but an engine with a displacement in the 800+ cc range . I find the current 650 engine to be quite adequate except at the top end to cruise along straight thruways to get to the real adventure locations. But, still the best 'all-around' bike I've ever owned.
