Motorcycle Mama Katey Sagal wins Golden Globe for Sons of Anarchy

There was some biker-love at the Golden Globes award show last night as Katey Sagal won for her role in FX’s motorcycle drama Sons of Anarchy.

Playing the unyielding matriarch of the most famous fictitious motorcycle gang on television not only did Katey Sagal beat popular favorites Julianna Margulies in "The Good Wife" and Kyra Sedgwick in "The Closer", but set the tone for an evening of surprises and upsets.

Putting a smile on everyone's face Sagal was introduced as the ‘motorcycle mama’ when the nominations for the category of Best Actress in a Drama were being announced. When Sagal was revealed as the winner the cameras switched between real life husband (and the show’s creator) Kurt Sutter and the actresses most famous on-screen husband Ed O'Neill, from her time on the cult comedy Married with children.

Not only was it the first Golden Globe win for the show but also for Sagal who had been nominated a total of five times over her career.

Whether or not meant to invoke the spirit of Harley-Davidson through its corporate color, Katey was easy to watch, negotiating the maze of tables in her orange dress as she headed to the stage to collect the award. Ever the professional and bringing some of the unflinching qualities from her SOA character Gemma Teller Morrow, Sagal began her acceptance speech with, "I'm so shocked, but I am prepared."

“I’ve been working so many years and I’m so honored to be up here so thank you Hollywood Foreign Press,” she continued.

Sagal went onto thank producers as well as the cast and crew from Sons of Anarchy. When thanking the writers of the show she noted that it was the words that ‘keep them there’ week after week.

When talking about her husband Kurt Sutter during the acceptance speech she said,”Sweetheart I love you and I’m so glad you are the boss of me.”

This public statement of love would win the actress the ‘Most Adorable Hubby Love’ category from TV Guide’s review of the evening.

Speaking of Sutter, it will be interesting to see the creator’s public reaction to the Golden Globe award after the show was overlooked at last year’s various awards shows.

‘Let's face it, kids, we are the dirty-faced outlaws who no one wants in their clean white town.  We are too loud, too violent, too brash,’ Sutter wrote after the show was passed over for an Emmy nomination last July, ‘We don't sing, have pretty sets, or wear retro suits.  They admire us from afar, wish they could do what we do, then they pull the shades and settle for the familiar and safe.’

As of the time of writing this article, Sutter hasn't updated his blog, 'Sutter Ink' with the news or his reactions to the surprising win.

Sons of Anarchy

But obviously the motorcycle love rode into town for the Golden Globe Awards, if not just to give a nod to the show’s ongoing success. Sons of Anarchy began its third season on September 7, 2010 attracting an average of 4.9 million viewers per week, making it FX's highest rated series ever; surpassing FX's other hits The Shield, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me.

On October 7, 2010, Sons of Anarchy was renewed for a fourth season set to air in 2011.

Appearing backstage moments later, Sagal said, "[Kurt] is super happy for me. This honors our show as well as honors me. So I give this to him, and we'll see what he does with it. I am proudly holding it."

:lol:I am overjoyed that Katey won the award. The only reason I watched the show last night was to see if she won. I love this show and I never miss an episode. Katey Sagal is definately one of the reasons I watch. It wouldn't be the same without her. I wish her all the luck in the world. She's finally been given a real chance to break out of Peg Bundy's shadow and I think she's done a kick ass job. Congrats to Katey,Kurt, and Sons of Anarchy.
