Girl may have a Dragon Tattoo but no motorcycle stunts

Motorcycles and Girl with a dragon tattooMany in the Clutch and Chrome offices have had their cinematic eye cast towards the release of the latest adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, if not simply to watch a rebellious, motorcycle riding lead female character.

News of the movies production and its motorcycle love affair has been in our pages for over year. It was last December we learned the ride featured in the movie is custom built.

Producers of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' felt that none of the motorcycles currently sitting on showroom floors could match the one described by Larsson for his main character, Lisbeth Salander.

"It is a custom bike built just for the film," producers were quoted as saying at the time of the report.

News has recently broken that filmmakers wanted to have more two-wheeled action than they were able to film with Director David Fincher ditching plans to film a motorcycle stunt scene with Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, the two stars of the movie

Unfortunately, no company was will to provide insurance coverage for the proposed stunt.

The recently reported comments of Mara calling motorcycles scarier than appearing naked or having to act out a rape scene probably didn’t help.

“The motorcycle was the thing I really didn’t want to do. You know, you’re going to be raped, be naked… But as soon as [director David Fincher] was like, ‘You’re going to have to ride a motorcycle,’ I was like, ‘Oh, really?’” Rooney said.

The gritty film sees Rooney’s character getting pierced, raped and nude quite frequently. Although Rooney was prepared to get down and dirty, it seems the motorcycle was a more frightening idea.

Mara stars as lead character Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of late Swedish author Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy books, opposite Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

The series of books that follows a violent theme were reportedly inspired by the late author witnessing the gang rape of a young girl when he was 15, leaving him disgusted by sexual violence. Larsson reportedly never forgave himself for failing to help the girl, whose name was Lisbeth and coincidentally the same as the young heroine of his books.

The actress, who underwent a dramatic physical transformation for the role, was required to take motorcycle lessons to learn how to drive the two-wheeler for the film, and she admits it was one of the tougher demands she faced for the shoot.

Mara says, "It was all challenging but the motorcycle was the thing that I was the least excited about doing. It seemed very dangerous to me."

But it wasn’t just reservations from Mara that pushed out any hope of a motorcycle stunt scene. Leading actor Daniel Craig reportedly wasn't prepared to hop on the back of the motorcycle with the inexperienced rider Mara. The director’s hopes for the stunt were completely dashed when he struggled to gain the approval of insurance bosses in case of any accidents.

"We put her on the plane to go to Stockholm by herself for five weeks to learn how to ride a motorcycle,” director David Fincher told reporters, “We so desperately wanted to do a scene with Daniel on the back of the motorcycle. (But) we couldn't get insurance for that if Rooney was gonna drive!"

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens in theaters on December 21st.
