Celebrities commit the first motorcycle sin

Across the world, motorcycle safety experts are probably rolling their eyes as they read the latest celebrity gossip.

The reaction isn’t to a scandalous affair or unflattering pictures of a favorite star, but to the recent trend of celebrities teaching fellow celebrities how to ride a motorcycle.

Long considered a ‘no-no’ in the motorcycle safety world, having an unqualified rider teach a relatively new person the finer techniques of competently handling bike first reared its star-studded head in an interview Angelina Jolie gave a British newspaper.

Discussing the MV Agusta beau Brad bought for her 35th birthday, Jolie revealed that contrary to her various appearances in the saddle on the big screen, she isn’t happy with her riding skill-set.

“Brad's a really good teacher - he's really patient,” Angelina said in her interview with the Mail on Sunday, “I'm very impatient so I can wreck a bike if I'm not careful.”

The motorcycle world seemed so excited have one the world’s sexiest women officially joining its ranks, no commentary was made on the informal motorcycle training.

Moving from one generation’s sex symbol to another, the teen actor made famous in Disney’s High School Musical series Zac Efron revealed in an interview with Detail Magazine his introduction to motorcycles came from Tom Cruise.

When the young actor currently starring in ’Charlie St. Cloud’ admitted to Cruise that he didn’t know how to ride a motorcycle,  the ‘Top Gun’ actor replied, “You wanna learn how?”

Reportedly Cruise took Efron (pictured below) riding, taught him how a bike’s engine works and showed off his collection of motorcycles. And quite a collection that could have been.

An iconic scene in both his movie career as well as the 80's film genre featured Tom Cruise racing a Kawasaki Ninja 900 along a runway as a F-14 takes off. Other motorcycle movie appearances include a Triumph in Mission Impossible with the actor riding a similar bike on the stage of Oprah's talk show to promote the movie. He is among the famous names that own a Confederate Motorcycle (a F131 Hellcat Combat model) and created a paparazzi stir when he arrived at the ‘War of the Worlds’ premier in 2005 on a Honda Rune with wife Katie Holmes on the back.

And Cruise caused a commotion a few years ago when he reportedly jumped to the top of the list for the first Ducati Desmosedici RR motorcycle, supposedly upsetting fellow celebrity biker Brad Pitt, with Denzel Washington and Michael Jordan.

Zac Efron evidently went to the Tom Csruise school of ridingSpeaking of Brad Pitt, his collection of motorcycles is probably equally as impressive. The famous actor has been seen on a variety of rides from Ducati to BMW and even his latest leanings, custom motorcycles.

But does any type of collection qualify a rider to teach a new person the techniques needed to safely operate a motorcycle?

Many studies have found that riders who took a recognized safety course vastly decreased their chances of having a serious accident. Qualified instructors and established courses not only teach the skills, but the process perfects them to a level sufficient enough for the open road.

According to the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, 25 percent of all motorcycle operators killed in 2004 were riding without a proper license, and 92 percent of motorcyclists involved in an accident were self-taught or learned from family or friends.

Besides, for more than 33 years, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation has been developing and maintaining high-quality, research-based rider education and training program. Its basic rider program is designed to take you from beginner to licensed motorcyclist in just two and half days, regardless of age or riding skill.

And as anyone who has tried to teach a better half how to drive, it can take a lot longer than two and a half days to get over an argument.
