BMW Brings Demo Rides of New Bagger to the Chip

A motorcycle marketing decision sort of rides into the rivalry between two notable bike rallies and hopefully into the hearts of riders.

The very first bagger from German motorcycle manufacturer BMW Motorrad has been making appearances at motorcycle events since the beginning of the year. Debuting at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show in Cleveland and making an appearance at Daytona Bike Week, the K 1600 B bagger is scheduled to attend Sturgis.

However, interested riders will be able to do more than just look at the new bagger model, BMW Motorrad USA will offer free demo rides at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. This will mark the first motorcycle event where demo rides are available for this new direction by BMW Motorrad, with ten of the highly anticipated new bikes to be shipped to the Buffalo Chip for the exclusive demo ride opportunity, along with a full stable of new innovative BMW motorcycle models.

BMW Motorrad representatives will be on hand at the Buffalo Chip’s free-access CrossRoads to show off all of the new bikes and assist with demo rides Friday, August 4th through Saturday, August 11th. BMW will also offer demo rides on the entire R nineT Heritage family, including the newly released 2018 R nineT Urban G/S, along with the Pure, Racer and Scrambler models. The demo stable will include Adventure, Touring, Roadster, Urban, and Sport bikes.

Historically, there's been strong rivalry between Daytona Bike Week and Sturgis, with the beach town celebration trying to compete with the Midwestern state on attendance for a few years. Both look to manufacturers to unveil new models and offer motorcycle-type incentives to draw bikers to the different events. The chance to test ride this new sleek-looking bagger will certainly catch the eye of a certain segment of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Largely based on the technology used in the BMW 6-cylinder tourer K 1600 GT and GTL, the K 1600 B features a spectacular backward sloping linear design with a specifically engineered rear section to reflect the characteristics of a grand American tourer. This not only makes the Bagger appear low-lying and slender; but also, thanks to the new rear frame, significantly reduces the height of the passenger seat.

As with the K 1600 GT/GTL, the Bagger’s 1,649 cc in-line six-cylinder engine produces 160 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. The bike comes standard with three riding modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic), Dynamic Traction Control, cornering-optimized integral ABS Pro, heated seats and hand grips, power adjustable windshield, cruise control, multifunction display with on-board computer, and Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment (D-ESAR) with “Road” and “Cruise” damping modes. Gear Shift Assist Pro, Reverse Assist, Hill Start Control, adaptive headlight, floorboards and more, are all available as options.
