Motorcycle charity event to end Myrtle Beach Rally

While the headlines for what was the Myrtle Beach motorcycle rally tell a story of bikers avoiding the city limits of the Grand Strand destination, some organizers are hoping for a completely different story.

A group of big-hearted bikers are using the spring motorcycle event to help two charities while riding into the Guinness Book of World Records. Organizers of the ‘Rally for the Rugrats’ and ‘Toys for Tots Rally’ are hoping to set the world record for the number of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in a single ride.

The event is scheduled to wrap up the Myrtle Beach event taking place on May 15th at Murrells Inlet. Registration is scheduled to start at 10am with the first motorcycle expected out at 1pm.  Not surprisingly, both the ride as well as the various places to register for the event are located outside the city limits of Myrtle Beach.

Once a popular event on the motorcycle calendar, local officials and lawmakers took steps to ‘discourage’ the rally from taking place.

Between the City of Myrtle Beach imposing a year-round helmet law, noise ordinances as well as limiting the number of vendor licenses, rally organizers have looked to surrounding cities and towns to host the popular annual event.

With the event able to trace its roots to 1940 it saw as many as 300,000 attendees at the height of its popularity.

But organizers of the charity ride have looked beyond the official efforts with their attention focused on raising money for Toys For Tots and The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund as well as attempting to break the world record.

While organizers will only be counting the Harley-Davidsons for this particular record-breaking effort, organizers note all types of motorcycle are invited to take part in the event.

These motorcycle rallies for charities are amazing. I'm always pleasantly surprised by the turn out. You never picture tough motorcycle guys being compassionate, but that is a misconceived stereotype. I found this great site which lists all the Charity Events like this one in the country. It's http://charityhappenings.org
