Proficient Motorcycling:
The Ultimate
Guide to Riding Well
David L Hough
First published in 2000 this 264
page book is usually quickly recommended by experienced riders
and instructors alike. David L Hough's easy to read guide to
motorcycling is a classic - well written, thorough, and
timeless.
The author is a seasoned rider with over 30
years of riding experience. He began writing about proficient
motorcycling in columns for Motorcycle Consumer News (MCN) and
gathered together all these articles as the basis for this
book.
The book is organized into
sections on risk and risk management, dynamics, surviving in
traffic, hazards, special situations such as rain and wind,
riding in groups, and riding with a passenger. It's
graphically rich, full of photos and illustrations on almost
every page to illustrate the point.
David Hough is a very
"down-to-earth" writer. Reading the book almost feels more
like sitting down and listening to motorcycle tales from a
crusty old biker wearing a leather with a sea of patches and
lines like ‘I had a panhead that’d spit out oil quicker than I
could pour it in!’ Many times, Hough's style will make you
laugh out loud. He characterizes rider types and in truth, you
will see a little of yourself in every type.
The author even spends some time
discussing road rage, its causes, and avoidance techniques. In
this era of ever-increasing traffic and aggression in which
people use their cars as weapons, the advice he gives makes
good solid sense. As riders, we all value the advice of the
seasoned biker whether we stumble across them on a ride,
during a rest stop or even through a friend. Well, owning this
book is like having your very own seasoned expert just a book
shelf away.
