The
Art of the Motorcycle
Edited by Thomas Krens and Mathew Drutt
Originally published to accompany a
1998 exhibition
at the
Guggenheim Museum in New York,
this book has 440 pages of pictures, essays, and descriptions
of the 100 or so motorcycles that were on display. It comes in
two flavors, in hardback which is ideal for the coffee table
of any motorcycle enthusiast and the paperback version with
prices ranging from $144 to $25 respectively.
Comments from people who have bought the book range from awe
at the presentation, information and photographs to
disappointment that some classic motorcycles weren’t included.
Bearing in mind the subject matter relied on the 1998
exhibition this last concern has to be considered
accordingly.
The book is a carefully crafted beautiful photographs,
thoughtful commentary and fact-filled essays from the historic
exhibition that had both the art and riding world buzzing with
appreciation for the beauty of the motorcycle.
It would be hard to call any book the ultimate motorcycle
coffee table book without it actually being the size of a
table itself. There’ll always be someone that complains their
favorite ride, past or present, was left out of the best
picked publication. Since this book was to compliment the
exhibition the selection was pre-chosen and the production
values of it are simply amazing, this publication certainly
comes very close to being the perfect addition for any biker’s
library.
