Ever read or hear something that sounds like biker lingo or rider slang? We've collected the most commonly used definitions, lingo and slang and put it in everyday language.

Screamin' Night Hog
A biker who prefers to travels long distances at night.

Shadow
Nickname for any Honda Shadow

Shaft drive
One of the three most common final drive systems of transferring power from the engine to the back wheel. Shaft drives have the advantage of being lower maintenance than the other systems, but the disadvantages are it's heaviness and how they affect handling of the bike with a notable elevation effect when accelerating.

Shaft Jacking

Irregular motion created by the final drive shafts acceleration which is in turn passed onto the bike's frame.

Shiny Side Up
Or Keep The Shiny Side Up. A common farewell among riders asking each other to be safe while riding.

Shooters on Scooters
Nickname for a motorcycle
police officer.

Short
Term given to the low final drive gear ratio.

Shotgun Pipes
An exhaust system featuring two pipes ending straight and together, giving the appearance of a double barreled shot gun.

Shovelhead
Also referred to as a Shovel. Harley Davidson's overhead valve Big Twin engine introduced in 1966.

Sidecar
Small carriages attached to the side of a motorcycle generally used to carry a passenger.

SIPDE
A Motorcycle Safety Foundation anagram used to help riders remember the order of judging traffic conditions;
Scan
Identify
Predict
Decide
Execute

Sissy Bar
A backrest added to a motorcycle seat to make a passengers ride more comfortable.

Skid Lid
Slang for a motorcycle helmet.

Skin
Term for a motorcycle's new paint job

Slabbing it
Taking the Interstate Highway

Sled
Slang for a motorcycle.

Slug
Nickname for an engines piston.

Sneakers
Nickname for a motorcycles Tires.

Soft Tail
Originally used to describe a mono-shock swingarm motorcycle, giving it a rigid (or hardtail) style but has full rear suspension capability. Harley Davidson has a whole line of motorcycles named after this system.

Solid mounted
Engine which is bolted directly the frames tubes.

Spark Plugs
Also referred to as simply 'Plugs'. A device which creates an electric spark starting the combustion process within an engine.

Sparking the Pavement
Further shortened by saying Sparkin'. When a biker lean the motorcycle over enough for a piece to drag along the ground creating sparks.

Spoke
Piece of the wheel that connects the hub and rim on a wheel.

Sportbike
A category of motorcycle designed to handle well at high speeds, corner tightly, and maximize power from the engine. Also see Crotch-rocker, rice-burner.
Sport Standard
A further classification of the SportBike. The riders stance is more upright with the motorcycle being more naked, ie with less fairings. Aslo called a
Streetfighter.

Sport-touring
A further classification of the SportBike. Being a compromise between powerful sportbikes and touring bikes, they have the storage systems for long distance riding and fast engines.

Springer Fork
These use large springs to dampen vibrations and road irregularities.

Squid
Nickname coming from the abbreviation of Squirrely kid. Given to younger riders who ignore the laws of the road or practice motorcycle safety.

An inexperienced rider riding beyond their abilities.

Standard
A further motorcycle classification. Although not used very often, it refers to a bike where the rider sits upright and very basic styling.

Statey
Nickname for a State Police Officer

Steelership
Derogatory nickname for a motorcycle dealership.

Steering Aids
Ruts in the road that lead the motorcycle.

Steering damper
Mounted to a motorcycle's frame and fork, used to prevent situations like a wobble.

Steering Head
Where the fork connects to the frame, specifying the steering angle.

Steering lock
A device which locks the forks at an extreme right or left angle, used as an anti-theft device
.

Stewartized
Nicknamed based on Martha Stewart, used for a rider who color coordinates the bike's colors, leathers, helmet, boots, and gloves.

Stock
Term used for a motorcycle set up to OEM specifications with no alterations or customizations.

Stoppie
When a motorcycle is stopped so suddenly the rear wheel lifts off the ground, making it the reverse-effect of a wheelie.

Straight Pipes
An exhaust system with no baffles (the device used to dampen the noise) inside, making the motorcycle very loud.

Stroke
The distance traveled in either direction of by an piston or rod in an engine.

Suicide Clutch
Also known as a suicide shift, it was an early-style gear shift mechanism which used a foot-actuated clutch. In the same design, gear shifting was done with a hand operated gear shift knob connected directly to the transmission.

Suspension
All the systems designed to support the motorcycle.

Super Slab
Interstate highway

Sweep
The last, and usually most experienced, rider in a group ride.

Swingarm
A pivoting structure
the back wheel mounts to which moves up and down with the rear suspension.
