Ever read or hear something that sounds like biker lingo or rider slang? We've collected the most commonly used definitions, lingo and slang and put it in everyday language.

Radial
Describes the way the cords of a tire are constructed.

Rainbows
Slang for oil being on the street.

Rainbows in the Mountains
The practice of local residents trying to discourage bikers from riding certain routes by putting fuel on the corners of the road.

Rain Grooves
Channels cut into the road (highway) surface to help water run off during rainstorms. When riding on these bikers should relax their grip and not fight the vibrations of the front wheel.

Rake
The motorcycles rake which is measured in degrees and describes the angle of the front fork or the steering axis from the horizontal or vertical plane.

Rat Bike
Motorcycle made inexpensively as possible, usually from several other bikes. Easily identifiable by the matt black paintwork

An ugly bike that's never washed.

Rebound
The return stroke of the suspension.

Repli-Racers
Sportbike with a riding position which tucks the biker into a tight crouch leaving him to nearly lay down on the motorcycle.

Revolutions per minute
The number of revolutions the crankshaft spins around in a minute. Abbreviated as RPM and often referred to as 'revs' in conversation.

Revolution
Harley Davidson's water-cooled V-Twin 'Revolution' first produced in 2002.

Rice Burner

Nickname for a motorcycle built by a Japanese manufacturer. Also referred to as Rice Rocket.

Ride Captain
Name given to the leader of a group Ride.

Ride Lieutenant
The last and usually most experienced rider in a group ride.

Riding Two Up
Riding with a passenger

Rigid Frame
Also called just Rigid. A motorcycle frame that has no swingarm.

Road Agent
Nickname for Highway Patrol Officer or State Trooper.

Road Gator
Nickname given to the pieces of truck tires that can litter the highway.

Road Rash
This occurs when a rider falls of a motorcycle and onto the road (usually asphalt) which rips away the top layer of skin.

Roadie
Nickname for the Yamaha Road Star.

Rocker
The small upper or lower patches (or colors) worn by members of a motorcycle club. Usually the clubs chapter name or location is found on the rockers. Also see colors.

Rocker Arms
The Parts of the engine that push upwards on the valve stems.

Rolling Chassis
Motorcycle still under construction.

Roost
Nickname for the spray of dirt off the rear wheel of a motocross motorcycle.

Rubber mounted
A system of rubber joint engine mounting which help dampen or isolate engine vibration.

RUB
Rich Urban Biker,
a term coined by Harley-Davidson enthusiasts to refer to executives, lawyers and other professionals who buy expensive motorcycles as status symbols

Run
An organized group ride.
