Ever read or hear something that sounds like biker lingo or rider slang? We've collected the most commonly used definitions, lingo and slang and put it in everyday language.

L

L-Twin engine
Effectively a V-twin engine with the cylinders opposed at a 90 degree angle which gives a smoother running engine.

Lane-splitting
Riding between lanes of traffic on a freeway. The practice is legal in some states.

Lay it Down
Also called 'Laid it Down'. Voluntarily putting the motorcycle on its side to avoid a major accident.

Leathers
Refers to the safety gear worn by riders such as jacket, gloves and chaps.

Legal Name
The name given to the nicknames acquired by members of outlaw motorcycle clubs.

Leviathan
Used to describe a a large, multicylinder dual-sports motorcycle.

Lifesaver
A quick check over the shoulder to make sure its safe to proceed before beginning a maneuver.

Limb
Nickname for a Male biker

Lone Wolf Biker
A rider who lives the Biker Lifestyle but chooses not to ride with a club.

Loner
A biker who shares the same values and enjoys the same life-style as outlaw gang members but chooses not to formally belonging to one specific club.

Lugging the engine
By letting the engines rpm it falls below its powerband resulting in subpar performance with eventual damage to the engine.

MC
Also referred to as a Motorcycle Club,
an organization of riders who have common interests both inside as well as outside the pastime of riding. Membership and the wearing of club patches (or colors) is usually a part of belonging to a motorcycle club (MC).

Mad Max
A circular burnout made by spinning the rear tire and then rotating the bike 360 degrees with the locked front wheel.

Market Street Commandos
An early Motorcycle Club

Marquis de Saddle
Nickname for a highly uncomfortable motorcycle seat

Megaphone
A device which goes onto the end of the exhaust to help tune it

Mexican Socket Set
Nickname for a Crescent wrench

Mill
Nickname for a motorcycle engine.

Milwaukee Vibrator
Nickname for a Harley-Davidson.

Minger
Wheelie

MMI
Motorcycle Mechanics Institute.

Monkey Butt
Slang for how your butt feels like riding a dirt bike all day.

Mono
Wheelie

Motorcycle Jockeys
Anyone who rides any motorcycle.

MSF
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation is the internationally recognized developer of the comprehensive Rider education and training system. Studies have shown that bikers who learn how to ride from MSF based courses substantially decrease their chances of being in a fatal accident.

Mud Puppies
Nickname for ATV and ATC riders.
