Motorcycle sales in Indonesia are continuing to out perform
their American counterparts.
Industry experts are quoting increases of 43 percent in
the first eight months of 2008 compared to the same period
last year with sales reaching 4.2 million. During that
flurry of sales Honda has managed to retain the top spot
with Yamaha coming in at an aggressive second place.
The robust growth came despite Indonesia's current high
interest rate environment and fuel prices that have
increased 28.7 percent.
Honda sold 1.9 million units to not only claim the title of
best selling brand but also take 47 percent of the market
share. Yamaha trailed closely with sales recorded at 1.6
million, followed by Suzuki with 0.56 million units.
Last year, more than 4.7 million motorcycles were sold in
Indonesia with Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki controlling more
than 95 percent. The country has seen a rapid growth in
motorcycle sales with two-wheeled ownership increasing by
125 percent from 2000 to 2007, growing 13.2 million over the
seven year period.
