The wait is
over for hopeful fans of the new Indian motorcycle with
recently released photographs and specifications.
The first
model to ride off the production line will be the Chief,
which comes in four flavors; Standard, Deluxe, Roadmaster
and vintage, all carrying the classic look expected with a
motorcycle that has as much pedigree as the Indian.
White wall
tires, sweeping fenders, studded saddle and unique pin
stripping all appears on the new Indian motorcycle, promised
to be delivered by Christmas. The prices will start at just
over $30,000 with the trademark valanced fenders costing
extra on the standard package but included in others. For
example, the 2009 Chief Roadmaster is Indian's touring edition
which includes a quick release windshield, an upgraded luxury touring seat and accompanying pillion/backrest to go along with studded leather saddlebags.

Some
manufacturing decisions have moved the classic Indian to set
up camp in new territory. A range of colors is available to
buyers, going beyond the three basic, but rich choices of
midnight black, Indian red and ivory cream. Two tone
combinations from the more traditional Indian red and ivory
cream to colorfully named Navajo turquoise and winter white.
Wanting to make the Indian unique in everyway, the
company developed their own 105 cubic inch V-Twin which
promises 100 lb-ft of torque. Sitting on a 68.4-inch
wheelbase the rider enjoys a seat height of 26.7 inches.
Color matched parts such as the console make the chrome
featured on the Chief seem to pop and stays away from
Harley's latest trend of matt paints and retro look. Many
agree both corporate heads and everyday Indian fans should
expect the direct comparison's to Harley-Davidson, with the
model's success in some ways hinged on their conclusions.
Coming into a tightening motorcycle market and falling into
the higher end of prices, both experts and enthusiasts will
watch closely to see how well the first model is received.
Early opinions have been across the board, but only the
powers that be at Indian can truly know if they have a
winner, with both the market as well as the motorcycle. |
