South Carolina motorcycle riders want red light legislation
By the Staff of Clutch and Chrome
March 27th, 2008

When approaching an intersection, riders are usually wondering if their motorcycle will trip the road sensors and change the traffic lights.

Wanting the same legislation passed by North Carolina late last year, riders in South Carolina want to legally treat a red light like a stop sign if not detected by the light-controlling road sensors. There was no length of time specified in the recent North Carolinas legislation for a rider to wait for an inductive loop traffic sensor to trip a traffic light.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is concerned over the effect such a law would have on drivers in vehicles other than motorcycles ignoring red lights, whether mistakenly or not. Officials also point to the state being among the top three in the country for motorcycle fatalities indicating such legislation could only make the statistics worse.

The legislation is waiting a review and vote by the appropriate committee on it's way through the legal process.
