In a bizarre international
twist to the helmet debate, Philippine motorcycle police who
don't
wear theirs while on duty are upsetting officials as well
as the public.
According to reports coming
from the Southeast Asian country, the Philippine National
Police recently warned policemen that they have to follow
the law and wear a helmet when riding around Metro Manila
and other urban areas.
Bikers as well as and
motorists have been complaining about policemen who don't
wear helmets when riding, but still pull over or flag down
members of the general public for not wearing helmets.
“When policemen ride motorcycles, they should also wear
helmets. Whoever is spotted without a helmet will be
apprehended,” Razon told Philippine's
Inquirer. net newspaper.
Director General Razon, who
rides motorcycles himself, stood by the country's strict
enforcement of its helmet law which carries the slogan 'no
helmet, no travel'. He has made it very clear that the law
as well as the possibility of arrest applies to the
offending police officers as well.
The Philippines is the
world's 12th most populous country, with a population of
over 85 million as of 2005. Manila, the capital, is the
eleventh most populous metropolitan area in the world.
