Motorcycle loving nurse survives elimination on Idol
By the Staff of Clutch and

March 13th, 2008
The rock singing,
motorcycle riding nurse from Indiana,
Amanda Overmyer, made her way through
the first elimination round of the final twelve.
Bearing in mind the popular
Fox talent contest was only slated to lose one contestant
and the show was an hour long, there was an obvious need to
fill airtime. Queue comedic actor Jim Carey in an elephants
costume to promote the new CGI Dr. Seuss movie, 'Horton
hears a who'.
Coincidently, the FOX movie
is hitting the screens this weekend.
After a promotional banter
between the host and Jim Carey, Ryan Seacrest admitted there
was such an overwhelming response to the recent use of the
Lennon/McCartney songbook that it'll be used for next weeks
contest as well.
More time to fill? Perfect
opportunity for an extended montage of Beatle songs
highlighting
each of the twelve contestants with solo performances. For one it would be the last
show.
Tuesday night Amanda
Overmyer, the officially endorsed Clutch and Chrome American
Idol contestant, sang 'Can't do that', one of the Beatles
early numbers. She dressed it up with rock rhythms, some
scat and a performance with so much energy previous
contestants faded from memory.
The show's sadistic streak emerges at this part of the contest with
Ryan having contestants stand up a group at the time,
torturing them with which one had the lowest number of
votes. When feeling particularly cruel, producers will even
let this part of the show take place over a commercial
break. But eventually all but one are allowed to sit down. The one left
standing moves to the other side of the stage, waiting for
the final word whether they'll continue on or not. Pad extra time
with guest singers in the form of past American Idol
contestants, then Rinse and repeat.
Amanda Overmyer was in the
second group of teased singers, but kept that biker
coolness about her as she was asked to sit back down. She
was safe for another week.
David Hernandez, Kristy Lee Cook and Syesha Mercado
weren't so lucky, being in the bottom three of all the votes
cast. By the end of the show, David Hernandez was revealed
as the contestant who was leaving.
So the Sportster riding nurse
will get another chance at the Lennon/McCartney songbook
next week and bikers across the country will have the
opportunity to support her. |
