Harley-Davidson shifts gears at Myrtle Beach motorcycle rally

The love-hate relationship
between it's annual motorcycle rally and the seaside city of
Myrtle Beach has been taken to another level by
Harley-Davidson.
Both the motorcycle
manufacturer and city officials are claiming hardships for
the latest moves.
Myrtle Beach Bike week has
been at odds with locals and aspiring politicians, putting
organizers in difficult situations and eventually shortening
the event itself. Strict law enforcement of traffic laws and
noise violations have plagued bikers attending the rallies
while political moves have been made to end the event all
together.
Harley-Davidson has decided
to hold its events during this year's spring bike rally in
the local Hard Rock Park's parking lot instead of the Myrtle
Beach Convention Center.
The official reason?
Harley-Davidson
representatives say the Milwaukee motorcycle manufacturer is
holding larger self-contained events.
This new direction is
represented by Harley-Davidsons current event being held
during Daytona Bike Week, with extended live music, a larger
display of merchandise as well as a complete range of
motorcycle models.
Harley-Davidson has even
brought in not just one but two travelling museums, to
entertain visiting bikers at the Ocean Center in downtown
Daytona as well as those at Bruce Rossmeyers Destination
Daytona.
However, local complaints
about crowds and noise have been an ongoing concerns for
both those for as well as against the Myrtle Beach
motorcycle Rally.
A local politician is
famous for running her recent election campaign on moving or
even banning the annual rally.
Proponents of the rally
point to the large influx of tourism dollars and claim the
complaints of elevated noise and crime are exagerated. |
